About Canadian National Symbols

Canada picked most of its best-known symbols surprisingly recently, especially compared with how old the country itself is. The maple leaf had decorated Canadian coins, buttons and regiments for well over a century, but it did not become the centerpiece of the national flag until 1965. The beaver, despite feeling like an ancient symbol, was not legally recognized as an emblem of Canadian sovereignty until 1975.

The flag itself came out of a genuinely heated argument known as the Great Flag Debate. Throughout 1964, Canadians and politicians fought fiercely over whether the flag should keep the British Union Jack in the corner or adopt something entirely new. Prime Minister Lester Pearson pushed hard for a fresh design, and after months of parliamentary arguments, a simple red-and-white maple leaf design was chosen and raised for the first time on February 15, 1965.

The beaver's connection to Canada runs even deeper than the flag's, tracing straight back to the fur trade that shaped much of the country's early European settlement. Beaver pelts were once so valuable for making hats in Europe that entire trading companies, expeditions and rivalries formed around hunting them. Long after the fur trade faded, the beaver stuck around as a lasting symbol of that formative period in Canadian history.

Some Canadian symbols are really institutions wearing a recognizable uniform. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, universally nicknamed the Mounties, are instantly recognized worldwide by their red serge jackets and wide-brimmed hats, an outfit that is now mostly reserved for ceremonies rather than everyday policing. Parliament Hill in Ottawa works similarly, since its Gothic towers and the clock-topped Peace Tower have come to represent the entire Canadian government in a single postcard-ready image.

Unlike most countries, Canada does not have just one official national sport. Lacrosse, a game with deep Indigenous roots stretching back centuries before European contact, was declared the official summer sport, while ice hockey, closely tied to the country's cold climate and long winters, was declared the official winter sport. Both were written into the same 1994 law, a rare case of a country legally recognizing two national sports instead of just one.

A few Canadian symbols reach even further back than European settlement. Inukshuks, stone landmarks built by Inuit peoples in the Arctic for centuries, have become a widely recognized symbol of the country as a whole, appearing everywhere from Olympic logos to provincial flags. Totem poles carved by Indigenous nations of the Pacific coast carry similarly deep cultural meaning and have become globally associated with Canada's West Coast.

Taken together, Canada's symbols form an unusually layered picture: a flag settled by a heated political vote, an animal honored for its role in the fur trade, a police force recognized by its ceremonial uniform, two official sports instead of one, and a handful of ancient Indigenous symbols that predate the country's founding by thousands of years. Few countries mix the newly declared and the genuinely ancient in quite the same way.
